How To Request A Traffic Collision Report From The California Highway Patrol (CHP)

How to Request A Traffic Collision Report from the California Highway Patrol (CHP)

Gather information: Before making a request, ensure you have all the necessary information about the collision, such as the date, time, location, case number, report number, and parties involved. A proper party of interest can make a request for a collision report (i.e., Driver, Passenger, Property Owner, Vehicle Owner, Parent of a Minor, or Legal Guardian).

You will also need to obtain and complete a collision request form that is provided on the CHP website: https://www.chp.ca.gov/traffic/request-a-collision-report

In-person request: CHP offices generally require you to visit in person to submit your request. Make sure to take all the required information with you, including a photocopy of your state driver license.

Pay the fee (if applicable): Depending on the CHP office and the type of report, there might be a fee associated with obtaining the Traffic Collision Report. Be prepared to pay this fee if required. Usually only check or cash is accepted, however, contact your local CHP office to find out the exact amount and methods of payment accepted.

Wait for processing: After submitting your request and any required payment, be prepared to wait for the processing time. The time it takes to receive the report can vary based on the CHP office’s workload and procedures.  Additionally, if the accident was recent the report may not be completed.  In our experience traffic collision reports can take any where from five to twenty-five days to complete.
